JCU statement on the reinstatement of Vasyl Marushchynets

The Jewish Confederation of Ukraine expresses its indignation at the decision of the Sixth Administrative Court of Appeal to reinstate Vasyl Marushchynets at work in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Marushchynets was dismissed from the post of Consul of Ukraine in Hamburg after his blatantly anti-Semitic and Nazi character comments and calls on his Facebook page came to light, but the Court of Appeal has recently reinstated him in his functions.

Such a ruling of the court contradicts the well-known decision of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on fighting not only against the communist, but also against the Nazi ideology. That is why we ask the Verkhovna Rada to pay close attention to this unfortunate precedent and to express as soon as possible its attitude to this strange court ruling, which gives grounds to the enemies of Ukraine to claim that anti-Semitism and xenophobia prevail in Ukraine.

“This decision is not only a wake-up call for the Jewish community of Ukraine, but also a blow to our country's reputation on the international stage. We cannot afford to have Ukraine represented by a person who publicly expresses views which are so alien to the civilization,” the JCU President Boris Lozhkin said.

Once again expressing our outrage at this court ruling, we sincerely hope that it will be overturned by the Supreme Court of Ukraine.
