On March 12, 2020, the Kyiv District Court granted the claim of
Mr. A. V. Portnov on the suspension of the Decision of the Kyiv City Council “On celebration on the territory of Kyiv of memorable dates and anniversaries in 2020” of February 27, 2020, in that part, which refers to the commemoration of the anniversaries of a number of persons, who are representatives of the Ukrainian national liberation movement, namely Ivan Poltavets-Ostrianytsia, Vasyl Levkovych, Ulas Samchuk, Vasyl Sydor, Yuri Lipa, Volodymyr Kubiyovich, Vasyl Halasa and Andriy Melnyk.
The Jewish Confederation of Ukraine strongly supports such a decision of the District Court of the capital of Ukraine and urges the Kyiv authorities to further study the biographies of the individuals whose anniversaries the Kyiv City Council proposes to commemorate on the territory of Kyiv by its Decision of February 27, 2020.
The Jewish Confederation of Ukraine calls on the Kyiv City Council to examine in detail all the available facts of the biographies of the above-mentioned persons in order to prevent a possible commemoration of those ones involved in cooperation with the Nazis during the Second World War and are known for their racist and anti-Semitic views.
The mission of the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine is to preserve the memory of the Holocaust, to strengthen the understanding of the involvement of the Jewish community in the development of Ukraine. We stand for combating anti-Semitism and motivate the international support of Ukraine's independence. That is why we urge the Kyiv authorities to take into account all the possible consequences, including international ones that may be triggered by the decision of the Kyiv City Council.
We hope that upon further consideration of the case, the decision of the Kyiv City Council on the celebration of the anniversaries of the persons involved in cooperation with the Nazis, will be finally canceled.
