JCU Statement on the Anti-Semitic Act in Strasbourg

Заява ЄКУ шодо антисемітського акту в Страсбурзі

The Jewish Confederation of Ukraine is alarmed by the rising level of anti-Semitism in Europe, and especially in France.

In February, the French government announced that the number of the acts of anti-Semitism increased by 74% in 2018. Unfortunately, the trend continues. Yesterday in Strasbourg, vandals hit a memorial stone from its pedestal on the site of the destroyed by the Nazis in 1940 synagogue.

The Jewish Confederation of Ukraine stands in solidarity with the Jewish community of France. We welcome the efforts of the French law enforces, who have already announced that the incident will be thoroughly investigated. We are also grateful to the French President Emmanuel Macron, who announced a ban on the activities of a number of ultra-right groups and the approval of a more stringent legislative definition of anti-Semitism.

We believe that by combining efforts, the world community will be able to cope with the disgusting, unacceptable discrimination in the modern world.
