The leadership of the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine took part in an emergency meeting of the European Jewish Congress to address anti-Semitic attacks on the activities of the head of the Jewish community of Romania, Mr. Silviu Vexler. The Jewish Confederation of Ukraine issued a strong statement on this issue.
The Jewish Confederation of Ukraine (JCU) expresses its full solidarity with Silviu Vexler, Member of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies, official representative of the Jewish community in Parliament, and President of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Romania.
We are deeply concerned by the antisemitic harassment and threats directed at Mr. Vexler following the passage of the landmark legislation against antisemitism he initiated—a law widely regarded as one of the most robust of its kind in Europe. That a Jewish lawmaker was subjected to abuse, incitement, and intimidation for advancing legislation against hate only demonstrates the urgent necessity of such laws.
As an organization that has made the fight against antisemitism one of its core missions, the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine knows firsthand the dangers of unchecked hatred. We call on Romanian political leaders and democratic institutions across Europe to unequivocally condemn this conduct and to ensure that those who stand against hate are protected and celebrated, not attacked or intimidated.
We stand with Silviu Vexler and the Jewish community of Romania.
