The main synagogue in Kyiv is the oldest Jewish religious and social center in Kyiv. The synagogue was built in 1895 and became the only synagogue, which was returned to the Jewish community after the Second World War. During the postwar 50 years it was only the Podil synagogue that was opened for the congregants in Kyiv.
In 2003, under the aegis of the JCU, a complete reconstruction of the synagogue was made. Eduard Shifrin became its main patron, being a Co-President of the JCU then.
The Chief Rabbinate of Ukraine, Mikvah, Jewish Women's Club, Youth Center and a Matzah Bakery act on the territory of the synagogue.
Later, a Prof. Volodymyr Shifrin Center for Jewish Education was built on the territory of the synagogue, where the Heder, Yeshiva and Kollel, and the Larysa Rodnianska Kyiv Jewish Cultural and Public Center function, where religious and cultural holidays are celebrated, a hotel and a kosher restaurant operate on a regular basis.
